LYON: The… upside-down elephant of the city!

Dear sports fans,

Lyon is a city worth visiting for its wonderful sights and haute gastronomy.

Did you know that Lyon is famous for having an… upside-down elephant? That’s what the locals call the Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière located at the top of Fourvière hill. They also call it the “hill of prayer”.

This particular spot will somehow take you from Ancient Rome to 19th century France.

The Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière opened in 1884 and is one of the most important attractions in the city.

You will have the opportunity to enjoy a panoramic view of the city from the symbol of the city which is visited by over 2 million visitors a year.

The Romanesque and Byzantine architecture give the impression that one church is on top of the other.

The Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourvière is dedicated to Our Lady, who saved the city from the Black Death that swept through Europe in 1643.

Enjoy the six wall mosaics dedicated to Our Lady and the six stained glass windows depicting Our Lady’s kingdom in heaven.

We would recommend taking the funicular to the top of the hill.
