It opened its gates in 1931 and renovated twice, in 1990 and 2013. Its capacity is 43,147 seats. It hosted two FIFA World Cups (1934, 1990), and the stadium has also been used for rugby matches. Many artists have also given concerts such as Madonna, David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen.

*** CATHEDRAL OF SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE (Piazza del Duomo, 50122 Florence)

It is the symbol of the city with the impressive dome dating from the 14th-15th century and for the facade marbles from Tuscany have been used. Climb the 463 steps, reach the top and enjoy the spectacular view.

*** BARGELLO NATIONAL MUSEUM (Via del Proconsolo, 4, 50122 Florence)

It is housed in one of the oldest buildings in Florence dating back to 1255. The palace became in the 16th century the residence of Barzelo who was the chief of police and was used as a prison throughout the 18th century. This is where the most important episodes of urban history took place. Today you will see works of sculpture, art and exhibits from the 14th century. You will also see ivory creations and a rich collection of medals belonging to the Medici family.

Definitely a must visit is the square, which dates back to the 19th century, has a bronze replica of “David” in the middle and has panoramic views across Florence.

*** BAPTISTERY OF SAN GIOVANI (Piazza San Giovanni, 50122 Florence)

It is one of the oldest buildings in Florence, as it was built in the early 16th century. Most people know about its bronze doors and carved depictions of Bible scenes.

*** Florence is not only a city of museums, but also of churches. Also visit the Basilica di San Lorenzo, San Miniato al Monte (located on one of the highest points in the city) and the Basilica di Santo Spirito.

*** La Specola which is a Museum of Zoology and Natural History, is a very beautiful experience to see wax figures, stuffed bodies and generally to spend a nice few hours in the city.

FOOD AND DRINK

Italy is famous for its pizzas and pastas. Florence could not, of course, be an exception. However, we would recommend that you start your tasty city tour with Bistecca alla Fiorentina which is Beefsteak and Ribolitta soup. From pasta we recommend Pappardelle al Cinghiale and Tagliatelle Funghi Porcini e Tartufo. Also, do not forget to eat Lampredotto which is Beef Tripe and made from the fourth stomach of a cow. For desserts, ice cream should be on your agenda, as should Schiacciata al Uva. Red wine is the usual accompaniment to your meals, with Chianti being the first choice for many travellers.

You can find relatively good value hotels in the city center, Santa Croce, San Frediano and San Lorentzo. Of course you have other options, because Florence has many neighborhoods that are ideal for accommodation.
