MUNICH: Giesing, the neighborhood of Franz Beckenbauer

Dear sports fans,

Munich is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. You will need several days to explore it and unlock its secrets.

Tourists visiting the Bavarian capital for a sporting event always make sure to visit Giesing as well.

It is a working-class district. Most residents support Munich 1860, but Giesing feels proud that a world football legend learned the secrets of football in its streets.

Franz Beckenbauer (1945 – 2024) was the son of a postal worker and grew up in Giesing with the dream of playing for one of the big clubs in Munich. Locals say his dream was to play for Munich 1860, but he eventually made a career at Bayern Munich.

Beckenbauer was born shortly after World War II and in Giesing he always found time to play football.

Franz and his friends were playing football with a ball they had made from rags.

At the age of 11, everyone who watched him on the streets of Giesing realized that this was a talent that should spread its wings. Over the years, he developed into one of the best footballers the planet has ever produced.

Wherever he was, he always found time to be in Giesing, the district he grew up in and loved.
