Brugge is a fairytale city that you should visit once in your life.
It looks like a city-painting that you will hardly find anywhere else on the planet.
It is no coincidence that the leading sculptor and painter of the 15th and 16th centuries, Michelangelo, chose the Belgian city to deliver one of his most special marble sculptures.
It is the sculpture of the Madonna and Child (Madonna of Bruges). It is located in the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Lady) and is a sculpture that does not resemble previous representations of the same subject.
Michelangelo usually depicted Mary holding the infant in her arms.
In this particular sculpture located in Brugge, Jesus stands next to his Mother, Mary, who is holding him with her left hand.
It dates back to the 16th century and is an artistic marvel.
Michelangelo also did not let his sculptures or works of art leave Italy. However, this particular sculpture is the first that the Italian sculptor and painter left his country and went to Belgium during his lifetime. It was purchased by the Mouscron brothers, who were wealthy cloth merchants in Brugge.
