BRAGA: Locals are proud of the best Francesinha

Dear sports fans,

Do you like sandwiches? Braga is famous for its mastery of making fine sandwiches that you will never forget.

Francesinha is a classic Portuguese sandwich originating from Porto. However, the people of Braga boast that they make it better than the people of Porto!

What exactly is Francesinha? The toasted bread has several layers and in the filling you can find steaks, salami and various types of meat. In some restaurants you can find other variations with shrimp, mushroom or egg filling.

Also, the cheese melts and the beer sauce creates an incredible explosion of flavors that you haven’t eaten anywhere else! You can even add tomato sauce. It is always accompanied with french fries to create another sensation at the moment of enjoying the wonderful sandwich.

The Portuguese claim that Francesinha has influences from France, but in the end the taste it leaves is a purely Portuguese taste with the aromas and ingredients that thrive in the country.

Dating back to the early 1950s, it is said that the originator of the sandwich was Daniel David de Silva who had spent part of his life in France.

It is one of the foods that you should definitely try if you are in the Portuguese north and especially in Braga.

Are the townspeople right to brag about Francesinha? We think they are absolutely right!

An excellent choice to taste the sandwich  is at the Real Taberna (R. Costa Gomes 496, 4700-262 Braga).
