Dear sports fans,
Athens is a city rich in culture and sports. In 1896, the First Modern Olympic Games were held in the Greek capital, based at the Panathenaic Stadium.
Your visit to Athens should definitely be combined with a visit to a unique archaeological monument.
Panathenaic Stadium opened in 556 BC. In 329 BC limestone was placed and in 144 AD marble was put in by Herod the Atticus.
Most people think of the Panathenaic Stadium as the Stadium that revived the modern Olympic Games. Indeed, it is intertwined with the great event that took place in 1896, but it is also a symbol of the ancient heritage of sports and the Olympic Games!
Opening hours are from 8am to 7pm for the months of March – October and from 8am to 5pm for the months of November – February.
General admission is 10 euros. Locals prefer the Panathenaic Stadium for their morning run.
It is also now used for concerts, cultural and sporting events, while it is the finish line of the Athens Authentic Classic Marathon held every November.
