Dear sports fans,
Valletta and Malta in general is famous for the many British pubs it has and for the amazing drinks and beers it serves.
Many tourists and quite a few football fans mainly visit the bar simply called ‘The Pub’.
It is considered one of the most popular bars in the world and not only in Malta.
The “myth” says that the famous actor Oliver Reed had his last drink there on May 2, 1999. He was in Valletta for the filming of the Hollywood movie “Gladiator“, in which Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix starred.
Locals regularly visit this bar to have a drink in what is now called “Oli’s last drink”.
A rumor had developed that Reid challenged a group of sailors from a Royal Navy frigate to a drinking match and that during that match he suffered a cardiac arrest.
Colleagues of Oliver Reed categorically deny this rumour. They pointed out that he was challenged by a group of people to take part in a drinking match, but he refused.
Whether this particular incident happened or not, tourists and locals don’t miss the opportunity to have a drink at ‘The Pub” and pay tribute to one of the greatest actors.
Many photos of Oliver Reed adorn the bar and several people rush to take pictures.
Definitely visit, because apart from the sad story of the British actor the bar offers great drinks and beers in an idyllic classic British setting!
The address of the bar is 136, The Pub, Archbishop Street, Valletta, Malta.
