TIRANA: Taste the delicacy of the 5th century

Dear sports fans,

You are in Tirana! Then you should not miss to try one of the traditional dishes, Tavë Kosi.

It is considered the national dish of Albania and you can find it in many cities of the country.

It is a dish of lamb, rice baked and mixed with yogurt and eggs. It also includes salt, pepper, oregano and garlic.

Did you know that it dates back to the 15th century and was “invented” by the people of Elbasan?

In other words, it is a food that has 7 centuries of life and is still one of the favorite dishes of locals and tourists.

The story began when the cooks of the 5th century, in order to please the Ottoman sultan, wanted to make the meat as tasty as possible.

So they had discovered that yogurt made a nice marinade on lamb. Over the years and centuries, Albanian cooks managed to perfect the dish with various variations.

But the basis remained the same: yogurt, eggs, meat and rice were always in the dish.

It is a food that you can find in almost all restaurants in Albania and Tirana.

It is one of the most beautiful delicacies that “conquer” the palate with the first bite.

When you go to Tirana you should definitely try one of the country’s most legendary foods to feel the way the locals feel: Magical!

We would recommend you try it at Shije Fshati Restaurant (address: Rruga e Dibrës 61, Tirana 1017). In this particular restaurant you will find other local delicacies.
