Dear sports fans,
Your presence in Reykjavik will give you the opportunity to taste traditional delicacies that you could not imagine.
One of the national dishes of Reykjavík and by extension Iceland is Hákarl.
This is shark meat. In fact, it is usually a shark that comes from Greenland and that has undergone the processing required to eat it without the slightest problem.
In many restaurants or bars you will find it served on toothpicks because it is cut into very small cubes.
The smell is quite strong, because the percentage of ammonia is very high, and for this reason those who try it for the first time, you may have to close your nose to avoid smelling it.
Many accompany it with a brennivín drink which is one of Iceland’s traditional drinks.
Whichever bar you visit, be sure to give it a try if you want to feel Icelandic for a while.
If you get over the initial shock of the smell which may be repulsive to some of you, we would recommend you try it to understand why the locals prefer it.
On the other hand, it is a fact that many tourists, when they tried Hákarl, did not have the best impressions.
However, there are still quite a few people who traveled to Reykjavík and as soon as they landed at the airport, the first thing they did was visit a bar to taste Hákarl.
A very good choice to try shark meat is Íslenski Barinn (Address: 43W8+QP5, Ingólfsstræti 1a 101, 101 Reykjavík). It is often accompanied with Harðfiskur, which is dried cod.
